Spring is Here at Last....

Tomorrow is the first day of Spring! We couldn't be more ready for it too! This has been a long, cold, ...very cold, Winter. In our area of Illinois, one of the first signs of Spring is the return of the robins. They have been away all Winter long and are coming back to build nests and start new families. We are all on the lookout for robins and other signs that Spring is here at last! If you haven't seen a robin in a while, here's a quick reminder of how they look. Their eggs are a beautiful shade of blue. The male robins have the beautiful orange chest, the females are more dull in color. What are some of the "Signs of Spring" where you live?

Hi i am Judy from Mr. Greenberg class i like your pictures and the song was cool. Maybe you can leave us a comment. I like the red bird the best. The baby chick that was born had no wings.

Judy,
Thanks for taking the time to look at our blog. I am glad you enjoyed the pictures and the song. I was looking on the Internet and found a web site that you might like. Someone was lucky enough to have a pair of robins build a nest right under their window. This person took photos every day. You get to see the birds grow a little more each day...from the time they were still in the eggs, until they were big enough to leave the nest!
Here is the link to the web site about the THE BABY ROBINS . I hope you find it as interesting as I did.

We all want Spring to come...but another snow storm? Who knew! Looks like our robins are going to have wait a little bit more! I'll be watching too.

When we see the gophers come out, we know spring is here!

We so wish for Robin to fly into your lives along with a long warm spring. isn't the weather funny around the world. We have had the longest hotest summer for many years. We hope for the same for you (but we don't want your winter - thanks). The sign of spring for us is usually the sound of cicada's - it's a song that fills the air at bbqs. Do you have cicadas?

Hi Beverly,
Funny you should mention the cicadas! Last year, May of '07, we had the excitment of the visit of the "17-year cicadas". They quite the "buzz" around town. ;-)
We had just a few by our school. The majority were found in areas with much older trees. Many of our kids went to nearby towns to gather "souviners". It's amazing that they live in the ground for 17 years and emerge for such a short time. Do you get them every year?

Hi Cindy - Thanks for your information. I knew that cicada's lived underground for a long time - however we still get them every year (infact I'm listening to some now out the window). It must be very different to wait 17years to hear them - but also exciting.
