Lowe's Helps Us Go Green...

Today we got a wonderful surprise from the folks at our local Lowe's Store. Josh Janovsky, the General Manager at the Lowe's in Bloomingdale, IL donated reusable shopping bags to our Kindergarten classes! We were so excited!

We are learning there are many things we can do to help the environment. One thing we can do is carry reusable bags when we shop. In doing a little research on plastic & paper bags vs. reusable we thought you might be interested to know:
  • A plastic bag takes about 450 years to biodegrade (That's just ONE bag! How many does your family use in a year?)
  • To make paper bags creates 70% more pollution than it does to make plastic bags.
  • Reusable bags save water. (The recipe for paper bags uses 1 part pulp and 400 parts water...WOW!! That's a LOT of water!)
  • Reusable bags saves sea animals (Plastic bags often end up in the oceans & lakes and many sea creatures mistake the plastic for food)
  • According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. goes through 100 billion plastic bags a year. It takes about 12 million barrels of oil to make that many plastic bags.
You can find many more reasons to go with Reusables over plastic & paper bags at ReuseThisBag.com.
We hope you will consider the option of the Reusable Bags when you shop at Lowe's or any other store you choose to do your shopping. Thanks again to the folks at Lowe's for their generous donation! Thanks to Annette's parents for helping make this happen for us!

Hi Cindy,
I am a First Grade Teacher in Jacksonville,FL and came across your ideas for recycling. I think they are wonderful. I wanted to share something that we just completed with you. Each year in April at our school, we hold an Art Extravaganza where classes assemble "themed" baskets and auction them off to raise money for our Arts Program. This year my class has been trying to incorporate recycling into EVERYTHING we do. So, instead of collecting items for a basket, we created artwork which I then scanned and ironed onto reusable bags. Our auction is on Friday! Take a peek at our blog in the next couple of days and I'll have pictures posted! Thanks, Haley Alvarado

HI Haley,
Thanks for visiting our blog and leaving your comments. We are beginning to strengthen our efforts to go more green! Last year's class dedicated themselves to the reusable bags and CFL lights, this year we're working to add recycling shoes and batteries to our list of changes. I wish you luck at the auction and I will pass along your idea to others at my school.
Thanks!

Cindy

Great ideas! As an Early Childhood Learning Specialist and Curriculum Coordinator at an all girl's school PK -12, I'm always on the lookout for new ways to teach sustainability to our youngest students. I can't wait to get back in the fall and begin exploring "bags" with our girls! I do some volunteer work with Heifer International and they have some great new FREE educational resources to help teach the idea of sustainabilitiy. You can check them out at Heifer.org.

Showing your efforts to be green these days can be shown in so many ways. It can be in the form of reusing or recycling some of your home or office materials, not using your car very often to save gas, or making use of eco-friendly materials in improving or repainting your living space. In our own little ways, may it be donating 'green' bags to children, proves that we are aware of what is happening with the environment and we are doing our part in spreading awareness to future generations.

It is nice to give to those less fortunate and make efforts in helping conserve our natural resources and protect the environment. Aside from bags, there are also recycled construction materials available for those who are thinking about improving or remodeling their living spaces to make more room. It is just a matter of having the right perspective and showing that we can make a difference in our own simple ways.

It's good to know that companies like Lowe's is promoting eco-friendly practices. Since it's spring time, a lot of homeowners are eager to get started on home improvement projects or in lawn maintenance activities. Gardening and remodeling using environmentally-friendly products contribute to the protection of our environment.
